Cluster Fecundus
by Grey AreaIntroducing ‘Cluster Fecundus’
Artist: Richard Galpin
With excitement Grey Area presents a specially commissioned edition by Richard Galpin entitled Cluster Fecundus.
For this editioned piece, Galpin turns his usual process on its head by obscuring the original photograph with a carefully refined computer-cut vinyl mask. This creates an intriguing interplay between the high gloss surface of the underlying photograph and the sharp, mechanical, semi-matt quality of the mask. There are two surfaces at work, fighting for prevalence.
The knowledge that there is a fully intact photograph underneath the vinyl layer provokes the viewer to try to reconcile the seemingly contradictory perspectives. Some areas of the photo seem to leap forward, or become three-dimensional, while in other areas the deep colour of the photo recedes, pushed back by the strong flat consistency of the vinyl. This tension results in a surface that is confident and restrained.
The pictorial language has an architectural flavour. It’s geometry is dictated to some degree by the large areas of colour in the original photo, and yet in other areas Galpin frees the work, allowing the revealed forms to create their own momentum. At turns adhering to the underlying image, and then surprisingly cutting against it, there is a constant play of conformity and exuberance, logic and invention.
The title Cluster Fecundus, from the word ‘fecund’, meaning fertile, eludes both to the prolific nature of an editioned work, and to the way that Galpin has found this a fruitful and seminal project for developing other work. This is Galpin’s first editioned work.
